The Gomukh–Tapovan trek takes you deep into the high Garhwal Himalayas, following the Bhagirathi valley towards Gomukh, the celebrated source of the Bhagirathi River.
Beyond Gomukh, the trail enters a dramatic high-altitude landscape of glaciers, rocky terrain and towering Himalayan peaks. Tapovan opens into a vast alpine basin beneath some of the most impressive mountains in the region.
This is a demanding Himalayan journey and requires good fitness, appropriate equipment, acclimatization and careful movement on high-altitude terrain.

Travel from Uttarkashi towards Gangotri through the Bhagirathi valley. Arrive at Gangotri, settle in and prepare for the trek while allowing the body to begin adjusting to altitude.
Road journey · Overnight at GangotriBegin the trek from Gangotri and follow the trail through the upper Bhagirathi valley. The landscape gradually changes as the route climbs towards Bhojwasa.
Trek · Overnight at BhojwasaTrek towards Gomukh and experience the dramatic glacier landscape at the source region of the Bhagirathi. Continue towards Tapovan through demanding high-altitude terrain before reaching the alpine meadows beneath the great peaks.
Long high-altitude day · Overnight at TapovanSpend time around Tapovan according to weather, trail and group conditions. Explore the surrounding high-altitude landscape and enjoy views towards the Bhagirathi massif and surrounding peaks.
Exploration day · Weather dependentBegin the descent from Tapovan and carefully negotiate the high-altitude section back towards the Gomukh valley. Continue towards Bhojwasa for the night.
Descent day · Overnight at BhojwasaTrek back towards Gangotri and then continue by road towards Uttarkashi, concluding the Gomukh–Tapovan journey.
